LAST WEEK'S LATE EDITION - APOLOGIES!!!

Well it was a good little run of regular editions, but the Occupied Argus has really struggled to keep up this past fortnight. Our attention has been diverted by the Homelessness Working Group and the pace of current events, locally, nationally and internationally. You can read how last week's edition ended up below.

For the time being we are unfortunately going to have to scale back the depth of RP/analysis/reportage.
Apologies to all our subscribers and supporters. We will still be maintaining the calendar and producing operational updates as frequently as is necessary/possible.If any Occupy supporters are interested in taking the reigns of this project, or picking up some of the slack on it, please get in touch.

Bear with us - we're not going anywhere!

After witnessing firsthand the righteous anger of the squatting community, @Sussex Uni, the media group feel this debate needs to be had and it needs to be had urgently. The intention is to facilitate that debate in a fair, free for all forum "at arm's length" in the form of "to camera" interviews.

If anybody is interested in getting involved, or just wants to try to ask Mr Weatherley a question in a public forum, please get in touch.

Ethnic Cleansing in London

Local authorities are shifting the plebs out of the City to various locations around the country. This "in defiance" of toothless ministerial "demands" that people should be housed locally.

Dave Defends Dodgy Dictator Deals

Not surprising, but good to have some background data from Constantine Report confirming everybody's suspicions about our multimillionaire arms dealing PM's actual ideology:fascism.

This week, Dave offered to arrange "safe passage" for Syria's genocidal president, Bashar al-Assad. The head of Human Rights Watch said offering immunity to Assad would give him a licence to kill (more of) his opponents.

Dave has restricted access to all journalists (except for the BBC's Frank Gardner), during his current arms dealing trip in the middle-east .

Alan Moore Releases Anonymous/Occupy Single

As well as hosting the exclusive premiere of Moore's track, NME has an "extra-special competition with prizes that supporters of Occupy and Anonymous – or fans of V For Vendetta will not want to miss".

The Occupied Argus will be checking NME.com tomorrow for details of how to enter...

Anonymous Bonfire Night: Protests & Hacks

"Trending" quote from the Vice article:

"It’s been said that Parliament is a kind of theatre, one in which the British establishment put on a democratic charade by taking the piss out of each other’s haircuts while agreeing with each other on the big issues – the old ideological battles between left and right being a thing of the past. If that’s true, then it’s mirrored in the UK's current protest scene. It’s basically a pantomime where everyone assumes a role, hams it up and then goes home to prepare for the next performance."

Local Arms Factory Haunted

Anti-militarist group, smashEDO's annual halloween demonstration was angry and noisy. smashEDO have been campaigning against EDO-MBM's factory in Home Farm Rd, Brighton for 8 years now, causing the factory much bother - if you would like to see Brighton & Hove reinstated as a peace messenger City (which we were before EDO set up shop here) please support this campaign.

SmashEDO have a fundraising Sunday roast at the Cowley Club, November 18th, 2-5pm.

Drinking Problems on The Rise

Hospital admissions for alcohol specific illnesses are up 15% across Sussex. Sicknesses including liver disease, strokes and high blood pressure. Hove MP, Mike Weatherley has responded by calling to scrap hikes in the price of beer. A populist move, which endorses our nation's culture of alcoholism and empowers nobody but the market. The Occupied Argus wonder how the increase in drinking relates to the apparent increase in violent crime...

Argus Report on Brighton's Poverty Crisis

Popular mainstream Brighton rag, The Argus have produced the latest report on Brighton & Hove's poverty crisis.

48 homelessness agencies in the city are struggling to cope with unprecedented demand for food and shelter as temperatures drop.

Brighton & Hove council reckon there are 37 rough sleepers in the city. Antifreeze say the number is about three times higher, according to research conducted by 10 agencies on a single night.

All this, in spite of Brighton Housing Trust being awarded £250, 000 odd towards the "No second night out" initiative back in January.

Many of Mike Weatherley's displaced squatters are also now sleeping rough. At the time, Mike said it was insulting to "compare rough sleepers with squatters". The link between these two vulnerable groups is now undeniably self-evident.

Protests Over Cuts to Brighton & Hove Care Homes, or Bus Routes?

Tory Woodingdean Ward Councillor, Dee Simson successfully conflates the issue of care home closures with the provision of bus routes... Brighton & Hove City Council are closing two care homes and cutting the 52 bus route, which further isolates yet more of the most vulnerable people in our community.

CCTV Snoop Poop Scoop Law & £1K Fines To Extend Throughout Sussex

Introduced in Brighton & Hove in 2009, the controversial snooping bye-law is now being extended to extract wealth from dogwalkers throughout Sussex.

Meanwhile, even the BBC has this week described the Government's draft communications bill as "leading to a police state"...

Caroline Lucas Urges Government to Abandon Badger Cull

Brighton Green MP, Caroline Lucas has called on the government to abandon it's plans to massacre the country's badgers.

Brighton Tory MP, Simon Kirby says she was right about EU Parliamentary meetings in Strasbourg being too costly and carbon intensive. He doesn't mention the badgers.

Cannabis Grown in Every Street in Brighton?

Shock horror! Not in Brighton, surely?

Earlier this year, Green Councillor Ben Duncan called for cannabis to be decriminalised in the city.

Parliamentary Paedo Ring Exposed

MP Tom Watson has called for an inquiry to examine evidence that a powerful paedophile ring has close ties to number 10 and Parliament.

Mr Watson said the police should re-examine the file relating to Peter Righton, who was convicted in 1992 of importing child pornography from Holland.

"The evidence file used to convict Peter Righton, if it still exists, contains clear intelligence of a widespread paedophile ring," he said.

Two-faced Hunt

"Health Secretary" Jeremy Hunt visited Norfolk's Dementia Care Unit last Friday, singing the praises of mental health care workers there.
The same day, he posted notifications to 500 of these frontline NHS workers that they would be losing their jobs.

Hunt proceeded to give an interview to itv, outlining his ambition to "make England the best place in Europe to grow old"...

Lord Bichard: "Retired Should Work for Their Pensions"

Former head of the Benefits Agency Lord Bichard has suggested retired people should be encouraged to undertake community service – or have their pensions docked.

Dot Gibson, general secretary of the National Pensioners Convention, said: “This amounts to little more than national service for the over-60s and is absolutely outrageous".

The first privatised NHS hospital to officially go into the red is £4m in debt. Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambrigeshire was the first hospital to be privatised in the UK back in January. It's losses have doubled in the last 10 months.

PM Dave Cameron to be "Investigated" by Toothless Agency

In a debate with that other bloke from the Labour Party, Dave hinted that the UK's economic growth figures might be good, before they were published.

The UK Statistics Authority said it had received several queries about the appropriateness of the Prime Minister's words, adding: "We are going to look into it".
